Myanmar Oversea
Seafarers Association ( Myanmar Seaman Association)
Myanmar Oversea Seafarers Association was formed in May 2002.
Since Myanmar was not in the so called White List as prescribed
in the Convention of International Maritime Organization( IMO)
there was a need to form a body representing the junta to deal
with international organizations. After a series of talk between
IMO and Marine Administration Department of Burma, it was in the
white list together with other 95 nations. Burmese Government
formed Oversea Seafarers Association to deal with IMO and other
International Seamen Union on behalf the junta.
After Burma gain the Independence in 1948, seamanship flourished
and formed Burma Seamen's Union . U Nyunt Khin as Chairman and U
Tun Kyi as Secretary, they established office at no.67 Brooking
Street (now known as Seikkantha Street ) and then in 1957, moved
to No.429 . Merchant Road, and is affiliated to International
Transport Worker's Association.
After 1962 Revolutionary Council came to power, all union and
organization including Burma Seamen's Union were disbanded in
1964. Seaman Union was formed as Basic People Workers Council
(21), U Hla Aung as chairman and U Than Aung as Secretary under
Botahtaung Township People Worker's Council.
Later in 1974 under the advice of the Central People Worker's
Council handed over the Basic People Worker's Council for
Seafarers to the authorities. Myanmar Oversea Seafarers
Association was formed in 2002.
